Avant-garde, Artistic Wedding Flowers at Salvage One
It’s always a fun challenge when couples come to us with visions of nontraditional wedding flowers. Rosa and John approached us with a very specific vision- their overall wedding style inspired by the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, Art Nouveau, and Gatsby. When planning their wedding decor, they aimed for floral elements that were unique, artistic, sculptural, painterly, dancerly, theatrical, surreal, moody and fantastical. They envisioned flowers that were unfussy-looking, yet exquisitely detailed. They created two specific gradient color palettes- one that represented Rosa and one that represented John. Rosa’s color palette was comprised of ivory, golden yellow/orchre, buttery yellow, coral, peach, pop of pink, and a mixture of sage and dark green tones; John’s palette was comprised of deep maroon and purple, near-black, greyish-mauve, pops of white, and a mixture of green tones.
They ended up creating a unique, artistic experience in honor of their wedding day. Check out all the amazing outfits, artistic details, and unique flowers from their summer wedding at Salvage One. Special thanks to Alisha Tova Photography for capturing all the goodness on photo!
We created John’s boutonniere to be large and dramatic, coming out of his breast pocket. It was comprised of the deep colors from his palette, which went super well with his unique, dark suit. He got ready at The Robey Hotel in Wicker Park, while Rosa got ready at their cool apartment.
How stylish are everyone’s outfits?! We love when couples aren’t afraid to tell their wedding party to express themselves, and to wear whatever feels authentic and comfortable to them. All the deep colors and textures combined to create a really cool look.
The wedding party is giving moody sass! We’re big fans of the eclectic wedding party look.
Rosa’s oversized bouquet contained elements like queen proteas, orchids, blush and ochre roses, crespedia (yellow billy balls), orange dahlias, peach ranunculus, blush callas, draping greenery, and more. We loved the beading on her unique wedding dress, and her boho head piece.
The evening before their wedding, the couple wanted to make flower crowns with their bridal party as a pre-wedding ritual. So we provided the materials for them (and a little video of instruction) to create their own floral headpieces (except for the Maid of Honor’s, whose we made - first photo below). What a sweet way to spend time creating and bonding before the big day. We love how everyone’s turned out so unique and different from one another.
Rosa and John’s altar/chuppah incorporated both of their color palettes - Rosas on the left, and John’s on the right. The colors and different flowers met and mixed in the middle, symbolizing their union. They wanted their ceremony flowers to be drapey, explosive, sculptural, and expressive. We love how dramatic and moody it looked, especially within the unique space of Salvage One.
They wanted to incorporate ikebana into their flower style as well, which is a centuries-old Japanese method of arranging flowers. The rough translation of this word is “making flowers come alive”. Through this style, flowers, greenery, and other elements are very carefully and intentionally selected, placed, and styled. The point is to evoke a specific feeling or emotion from the observer, just like any other art form would. Rosa wanted to pay homage to this style to honor her late mother, who practiced Ikebana. What a special and unique way to pay tribute to her mom and their wedding day.
Their pup was part of the celebration, too! We created a greenery and floral wreath for their sweet dog, who walked with John down the aisle. How adorable are they?!
We created two tall arrangements in ornate, gold vases at the ceremony aisle entrance. Two notable flowers used in these arrangements were queen protea (the large, light pink flower in the middle) and orange eremurus (the tall, curvy flowers jutting out from the top). The wooden elephants loved them - can’t you tell?!
Once the ceremony was over, it was time for an outfit change! They both changed into tan-colored outfits for the second part of their celebration. Rosa ditched her bouquet and put on a large flower crown (that we made), which incorporated both her and John’s color palettes. It was a perfect way to still incorporate flowers into her outfit, only no hands were required. Perfect for dancing! We loved the way John’s boutonniere popped against his tan suit. We’re obsessed.
The reception decor turned the space into a moody, sculptural, dramatic atmosphere. We hung a floral piece over the sweetheart table, that combined Rosa and John’s color palettes - meeting in the middle to again signify the merging of their two worlds. Flowers used were hanging red amaranthus, white orchids, deep purple hydrangea, eucalyptus, roses, and mums. They truly picked the perfect venue for their theatrical, artistic wedding vibe.
As for dinner table decor, we created sculptural arrangements with a combination of the two palettes. We also added tall burgundy taper candles and gold votives for extra drama. The tables looked awesome with the burgundy, gold foil menus and fancy butter platters. We so wish we could see the photos that came from the disposable cameras that were on each table! All the textures and colors looked so good together - don’t you agree?
Rosa and John created a unique, artistic atmosphere for their wedding day, and we were so happy to contribute to it. Cheers to the happy couple! Thanks for letting us add some epic florals to your special day.
